Ethiopian North is a paradise for lovers of history of ancient Christianity and secrets. Here, in between white and red rocks, were carved hundreds of churches in the V century, many of which are still functional today and are inhabited by monks and hermits. Access to some monasteries is restricted and requires a real adventure: ascension on ropes made of animal skins, a small pedestrian crossings, etc.

However, as a reward you get a unique heritage of the Ethiopian church, smiles of the monks and contact with the ancient history of early Christianity. Lalibela, Gondar, Axum, Gheralta and lake Tana are real Ethiopian and world treasure.

Day 1

Day 1The group meets in Addis Ababa International Airport and transferred for breakfast. After that short excursion in Addis Ababa can be organized and after that transfer to domestic terminal for Addis-Ababa-Makele 12:00-13:35 ET102 flight. On arrival drive to Hawzien (95km) visiting en-route the Tigray rock churches namely Wukro Chirkos and Abreha We Atsbeha, with beautiful frescoes and views.

Day 2

Day 2After the breakfast we’ll start to drive to Axum, the ancient country capital and one of the most important archeological sites in Ethiopia. En-route we’ll visit country’s most ancient temple in Yeha and famous Debre Damo monastery, the most antient rocky monastery in Ethiopia.

After the lunch we’ll visit Stelae Fields, Kings Gebre-Meskel and Kaleb Necropolis, Tsion Mariam Church and ruins of Queen Sheba’s Palace.

Day 3

Day 3First half of the day we’ll drive to Gondar and after that we’ll visit Blue Nile waterfall!

Day 4

Day 4Our morning we’ll start from sightseeing of Gondar and visit the Royal Enclosure, Debre Berhane Selassie Church, Fasiledese’s Bathing Pool and former Jewish Felasha village in Wolleka.

Gondar was once the imperial capital of Ethiopia in 17-18 centuries and today one of the most popular tourist places to visit. Here you’ll find the royal enclosure, the king’s pool, inaccessible walls and Debre Birhan Selassie church, one of the most famous and beautiful ancient churches of Ethiopia. There is also a village of Falasha tribe nearby, recognized as one of the lost tribes of Israel. There’s a pleasant mountain climate in Gondar, delicious food and we can say it is the most beautifully landscaped and the largest city of Ethiopia.

Day 5

Day 4Our morning we’ll start from nice boat cruise over Lake Tana to visit Ura Kidane Mehret Monastery, one of the most beautiful in Ethiopia.

Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia, with the length of 80 kilometers. About 30 hermit monasteries are located on its small islands, each of which is a sample of the traditional Ethiopian Christianity, and curator of ancient books and icons. We travel on Lake Tana by boat, moving between the islands and visiting its monasteries.

Day 6

Day 4Full day sightseeing of Lalibela’s eleven 13th century rock-hewn churches, UNESCO site and one of the wiorld wonders!

The medieval capital of Ethiopia, originally designed to be the New Jerusalem, replacing home for the persecuted Christians of the Holy Land. Lalibela today is one of the most famous places in the world, its next wonder of the world, protected by UNESCO: cut down vertically in the red rocks 13 churches are a unique work of human hands, capturing the imagination of both, medieval travelers and modern ones.

Lalibela seems to us as an essential point of the program in the northern Ethiopia, a place filled with memorable and unique architecture, ancient temples and manuscripts, crosses and icons. And all this – on a background of classical Ethiopian mountain view. There are also several ancient mountain monasteries around Lalibela, visiting them is an adventure in itself.
